Joan Sveen
Joan
Sveen is a native Calgarian. Growing up she spent much time at the family ranch west of Calgary, riding and hiking in the foothills. Inspired by the dramatic scenery found in her neck of the woods, Joan strives to portray the energy and power found in the elements and the land. She spends much time in her favourite locale, photographing, field sketching and painting. Usually the final paintings are completed in her studio.
Joan’s work is about the love she has for nature. The colours she uses symbolize the beauty and the strength she finds in the environment. When painting en plen air, she hones in on what has drawn her to the subject. From there the painting becomes very spontaneous on location. Through her paintings, Joan endeavours to give insight as to how she is impacted by nature and to transfer some of her love, respect and awe of nature to the viewer.
Recently retired from teaching, Joan is now working as a full-time artist, much to her delight.
